We all know that the Microsoft co-operation might have made various attempts to be more transparent with their privacy settings even though there is still much more work to be done.
In this post, there are five privacy-related settings you can change for a less invasive and more secured Windows 10 user experience.
Turn off your location:
If you're a mobile device user, such as a tablet or a laptop, there are plenty of times when allowing third-party apps to access your location can be said to be convenient. But please it doesn't mean that you should leave your location active at all times.
When your location is switched on, Windows 10 stores your device's location history for up to 24 hours and allows those discrete apps with location permission enabled to access your location data.This feature can also be used to track a pc user anywhere on the whole wide world.
To turn off your location on the Window 10 PC, go to Settings > Privacy > Location and the Change button under Location for this device should be on so, all you have to do is just to switch it Off by clicking on it.
Stop syncing:
As a Window 10 PC user, You should know that there's a lot and lots of syncing going on in your PC. If you sign in with a Microsoft account, your settings -- including passwords -- may be synced across to any other devices you sign in using the same google account. Now, If you turn off syncing, your settings and passwords will not be sent across to other devices when you sign in with your Microsoft account, so you'll need to do things like enter passwords in manually which is perfect to ensure maximum security.
To turn off settings syncing for your window 10 PC, just navigate to Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings. You can either turn off all syncing at once, or you can turn individual sync settings for various apps off.
Make Use Of A Local Account:
Even If you've disabled syncing in your window 10 PC, then there's little reason to use your Microsoft account to log into your PC.
I will advice you to make use of a local account instead that doesn't require you to input an Email , which will prevent Microsoft from collecting information about you. With a local account, you can create a username and password for your PC and that's it.
N/B:(You will still need a Microsoft account to buy apps from the Windows Store and if you do want to sync files with Microsoft services such as OneDrive, OneNote and Office 365.)
To create a local account for your Window 10 PC, just navigate to Settings > Accounts > Your info, click on the Sign in with a local account instead and follow the instructions to create a username, password and a password hint.
Switch Off Your Advertising ID:
Each Microsoft account has a unique advertising ID that lets the company collect data about you and deliver a personalized ad experience. If you eventually sign into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account, then the personalized ads will be displayed on your computer.
You'll see them ads in apps you have downloaded and possibly in the operating system itself (in the Start menu, for example).
To turn these ads off in Windows 10, go to Settings > Privacy > General and switch it off by clicking on the box
Turning this feature off will prevent personalized ads from popping up in your Windows 10 PC, but this won't stop you from seeing personalized ads when you're using your Microsoft account on other devices. To get rid of ads on all other devices, such as in browsers, head to Microsoft's advertising opt-out page.
Lock Down Your Lock Screen:
The lock screen is the first thing anyone sees when they open your device Window 10 PC
Here are some of the three things you need to secure your lock and log-in screens:
Make sure your notifications are not showing on the lock screen. Go to Settings > System > Notifications & actions and toggle off Show notifications on the lock screen. The downside to turning this feature off is that you won't be able to see any notifications until you unlock your device.
Turn off the Cortana on your lock screen by opening Cortana and navigating to Settings > Cortana > Talk to Cortana and switch off Use Cortana even when my device is locked. The downside to turning this feature off is that you won't be able to use Cortana while your device is locked. You can also limit her scope on the lock screen (instead of turning her off completely).
You are advised to hide your email address on the login screen by navigating to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and making sure that Show account details (e.g. email address) on sign-in screen is switched off. There's no downside to turning this feature off, unless you really like seeing your email address.
Lastly, i will advice you to visit Microsoft's dashboard for your account to see what information it's storing in the online cloud about you, including your browsing, search history and whole lots more...
